They say there are two types of film industry kids. Those who see their parents in the film industry and aspire to be there and those who swear never to get into the industry. Meghna Ghai Puri is certainly of the second type. Daughter of the Showman — Subhash Ghai and Rehana — she certainly is a chip off the old block. Currently, President of Whistling Woods International, this film kid has been instrumental in carrying forward her father’s vision of a comprehensive film school. She recommends the timeless drama Forrest Gump — a film that gave her the inspiration to be independent.
Forrest Gump is based on a novel written by Winston Groom in 1986. The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Eric Roth. Tom Hanks plays the title role of Forrest Gump and his love interest, Jenny Curran is played by Robin Wright Penn. The film revolves around Gump, who has an IQ level of 75 and still manages to accomplish great things. More than anyone would expect him to.
He is telling his story to a bunch of people at a bus-stop where he is waiting to meet his long lost love. The people at the bus-stop change from time to time and his story receives different reactions from them. Forrest joins the army for service in Vietnam, finding new friends called Dan and Bubba, he wins medals, starts a table tennis craze, creates a famous shrimp fishing fleet, inspires people to jog, create the smiley, write bumper stickers and songs, donating to people and meeting the president several times. He achieves all this but his one true love, Jenny, eludes him.
Tom Hanks portrays the character with perfection and that’s why the message comes across well. The story is the strong point of the film, according to me and the director has done a great job. He managed to reach out to people with his direction. The film is brilliant from every perspective — technical, story and direction. The visual effects are great as they enable Gump to interact with famous personalities. It’s a film that can cheer you up on a bad day.
When I saw this film I was about to leave home and go to boarding school in London. All my life I had been a dependent child. I relied on my mother for every little thing. I had never been away from home and family. So the idea of boarding school and living alone scared me. This film encouraged me to be on my own. It made me realise that if a person with low intelligence levels managed to be successful in life then so could I. Eventually, London turned out well for me as I met my husband, Rahul, there. I’ve been happily married for six years and have a fourteen-month-old baby.
Forrest Gump is inspirational because it tells the story of a man who rose above his problems and proved that determination is more important than ability. It’s a must watch for everyone.
