SCARLETT JOHANSSON: AMERICA HAS ALWAYS FOLLOWED SCANDALS

SCARLETT JOHANSSON claims America hasn't changed much in the last 60 years because people are still fascinated with scandal and intrigue. Johansson compares her movie THE BLACK DAHLIA, based on the gruesome murder of an actress in the 1940s, with the case of JOHN KARR, who was recently arrested in Thailand on suspicion of murdering six-year-old beauty queen JONBENET RAMSEY 10 years ago (96). Speaking at the Venice Film Festival in Italy yesterday (30AUG06), she says, "I think generally, when there are periods of depression in a country, people distract themselves with scandal. "We've seen it in the past and it's sort of happening right now. There's mass genocide going on and people are focused on bringing somebody over from Thailand for tests that may or may not prove something."
